Sex and stress modulate pupal defense response in tobacco hornworm

چکیده
Abstract In insects, larval and adult defenses against predators have been well studied. However, pupal (also known as resting stage) overlooked not examined thoroughly. Although some pupa possess antipredator strategies such hairs, spines, cryptic coloration, exudation of chemicals, few studies tested these responses the factors affecting them. Here, we investigated behavioral in tobacco hornworm Manduca sexta that pupates soil by introducing an external stimulus using vibrations from electric toothbrush to mimic predation. We observed M. made violent wriggling (twitching), followed pulsating movements response vibrational stimulus. Detailed examination showed twitches events occurred more frequently for longer periods time male were dependent on magnitude stress (high low frequency). when estimated angular force exerted radian momentum twitches, it was found be independent sex. A follow-up experiment possible cascading effects exposure eclosion success revealed low- high-frequency didn’t cause any common defects eclosed adults. Our study clearly demonstrates so-called defenseless stage uses a wide range measurable defense behaviors can actively defend should further-linking behavior with underlying mechanisms.

Sex-Specific Odorant Receptors of the Tobacco Hornworm Manduca Sexta
As odor information plays a vital role in the life of moths, their olfactory sense has evolved into a highly specific and sensitive apparatus relevant to reproduction and survival. The key players in the detection of odorants are olfactory receptor (OR) proteins. Here we identify four OR-encoding genes differentially expressed in the antennae of males and females of the sphingid moth Manduca se...
متن کاملHormonally mediated reprogramming of muscles and motoneurones during the larval-pupal transformation of the tobacco hornworm, Manduca sexta.
The larval-pupal transformation of Manduca sexta results from an exposure to ecdysteroids in the absence of juvenile hormone (the commitment pulse), followed by a larger exposure to ecdysteroids (the prepupal peak) with a reappearance of juvenile hormone (JH). The prepupal ecdysteroid peak triggers the degeneration of abdominal muscles, and the dendritic regression and death of identified moton...
متن کاملThe ecdysteroids from the tobacco hornworm during pupal-adult development five days after peak titer of molting hormone activity.
Six naturally occurring C27 ecdysteroids were isolated and identified from the tobacco hornworm during pupal-adult development five days after peak titer of molting hormone activity. In order of decreasing quantities the hormones were: 20,26-dihydroxyecdysone, 3-epi-20-hydroxyecdysone, 20hydroxyecdysone, 3-epi-20,26-dihydroxyecdysone, 3-epi-ecdysone, and ecdysone. 20-Hydroxyecdysone, in an earl...
متن کاملSex Steroids Modulate Fish Immune Response
For some time behavioural and ecological studies have suggested that sex steroid hormones regulate several immune processes in fish. For example, the immunocompetence handicap hypothesis relates the heritability of parasite resistance with secondary sexual ornaments, which are determined and maintained by androgens. Such ornaments are probably a good indicator to potential mates of genetic resi...
متن کاملEvaluation of Biochemical Response and Defense Mechanism of Wheat Antioxidant Enzymes to Salinity Stress
Understanding the reaction form and biochemical response of wheat cultivars about the salinity stress can help to better understand the defense mechanisms and identify the indicators and biomarkers of tolerance screening for salinity stress in this strategic plant and other field crop. For this purpose, biochemical traits related to salinity tolerance of wheat cultivars were evaluated as a f...
